Breaking Down The Sun Coast
For the purpose of LocalAngler, we’ve defined the Sun Coast region as the following counties: Pinellas County, Hillsborough County, Manatee County and Pasco County.
Lake Tarpon is a major point of interest here, and a great producer of some quality fish. Just north of Lake Tarpon, you’ll find the Anclote River, which ventures inland for 29 miles, flowing westward towards the gulf. Absolutely, great fishing also on the west side of Old Tampa Bay and all the way south to St. Petersburg.
There’s great fishing all through the inland portion for various freshwater species, and a stellar nearshore bite, as well. You simply can’t go wrong here. Focusing on the inner portion of Tampa Bay, there’s a ton of great water from the Little Manatee River, all the way north to the northeast portion of Old Tampa Bay. Don’t sleep on the miles of canal system and freshwater access all throughout the county, either!
Between Lake Manatee and Ward Lake you can find your fair share of panfish and quality bass fishing, but with the Gulf coming in, you can also find a quality inshore bite, as well! Riddled with chain ponds and creeks, it’s gonna be really hard to find a reason not to fish every day.
Originating near Crews Lake, the Pithlachascotee River, or Cotee River, covers a crazy range of fish, due to it opening up into the Gulf. Also featuring quite a few other bodies of water, aside from the coastal waters, you can find quality fishing on Hancock Lake and Middle Lake.
